Aftermarket Radio/CD/MP3 that uses steering wheel remote

I just bought a 2001 Honda Odyssey 3.0 Prestige (at least that's what the model is called here in New Zealand - it's the 4WD V6) with what looks like a stock factory radio/cassette.

The steering wheel remote doesn’t work but I can get that fixed as part of the purchase. Being a Japanese import into New Zealand though, the radio needs either a band expander or complete replacing, so before I take it in, I'd like some advice if possible.

I want a CD/MP3 player as well, so would it be better to get a complete replacement HU that includes a radio that handles NZ frequencies, and if so is there any particular brand that would still work with the steering wheel remote? Is there an adapter that can do this?
