in-dash drawer latch failure

The drawer at the bottom of the dash just below the DVD player, keeps sliding open when I accelerate. The latch moves freely and won't engage to keep the drawer latched shut. I removed the drawer and found an odd looking little piece of metal that is obviously the problem but I can't figure out how to put it back into place so it will do its job. It doesn't seem to want to go in easily no matter how I try. I don't want to force it for fear I'll break it or the drawer. Anyone else have this problem. It's very annoying for that drawer to slide open each time I take off from a red light.
